This short essay by Terence DuQuesne is reprinted from the 1990 Mandrake Press edition of Aleister Crowley’s The Rites of Eleusis, in which it first appeared. In the essay, the author explains the mysteries of the Greek cult of Eleusis, which was already ancient at the time of ancient Greece. The essay includes translations by the author from the Hymn of Demeter, the earliest literary source on the cult, and notes some parallels between the Greek legend of Demeter, on which the cult was based, and ancient Egyptian mythology.
